The Main Advantages of The Blue Card in Poland

Blue Card vs Residence Permit

When a foreigner plans to legally live and work in Poland, a logical question arises: what is better – a Blue Card or a Residence Permit? Both options allow you to stay and work, but there are significant differences between them that may affect your decision.

Blue Card Poland (EU Blue Card) is designed specifically for highly qualified professionals. To obtain it, you must have a university degree or at least five years of proven professional experience in your field. In addition, the contract with the employer must provide for a high salary, at least 150% of the average salary in Poland (as of 2025, this is approximately PLN 8673 gross per month).

In turn, the Temporary Residence Card based on work is suitable for a wider range of applicants. To obtain it, it is enough to have a legal employment contract, and there are no requirements for salary or education. This makes it a popular option among workers in manual or less specialized occupations.

However, the Blue Card offers many more benefits in the long run. For example, after 18 months of residence in Poland with a Blue Card, you can legally move to another EU country to work without re-legalization. In addition, after two years, you do not need to submit new documents when changing employers – it is enough to notify the government. In the case of a regular residence card, any change of employer requires a new procedure.

Another important advantage of the Blue Card is extended rights for family members. They can obtain a residence permit together with you and work without restrictions, which greatly simplifies the family’s adaptation in Poland.
