To apply for a residence permit in Poland, whether temporary or permanent, you must do so in person or by post at the relevant office, and immediately before your current residence permit expires.
There are several categories of temporary residence permits in Poland, including:

- Persons benefiting from international protection or tolerated stay, children of Polish citizens and foreigners with permanent residence or a long-term EU residence permit.
The long-term EU residence permit is intended for persons living in Poland for at least 5 years, with insurance and a stable source of income.
In special cases it is possible to obtain a permit for humanitarian reasons or a tolerated stay permit, which are issued by the Border Guard.
Poland also offers various forms of protection for foreigners, including asylum, refugee status and subsidiary protection, which are processed by the Office for Foreigners.

In Poland, employers are responsible for legalising the employment of foreign nationals who have entered on the basis of biometric passports, visas, or who hold a temporary residence card. It is necessary to obtain the appropriate work permit for any non-EU citizen coming to work in Poland.
